Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua (sha-ta-qwa) is a year round nonprofit performing arts organization. We operate an intimate 900-seat, all-canvas, state-of-the-art tent theater, producing and presenting a seventy-plus night summer season of concerts, plays, lectures, and Chautauqua Original Musicals. This growing repertoire of original, historical musicals celebrating the history of the people and places of the Midwest is the heart and soul of Big Top Chautauqua.
We are nestled at the base of Mt. Ashwabay Ski Hill, 3 miles south of Bayfield, Wisconsin, overlooking Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Our summer schedule includes performances by renowned national, regional and touring musicians and runs from mid June to early September. On balmy summer nights the tent sidewalls can be lifted and people may sit outside and even up on the hillside. The sound is superb and on clear nights you can see the Milky Way and sometimes even the Northern Lights!

"I have left behind the aesthetics I had assumed about photos. With a digital camera, I collect images, primarily from nature, or bring objects into my studio to photograph or scan. I file hundreds of photos by color/subject and use them as source material for work which is made from the interaction of multiple electronic layers and from drawing into the surface. The process more closely resembles painting and drawing than photography. Layers of translucent images build a luscious, moody surface."

In 1908, a Swiss American family named Hauser settled in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Great-Grandpa John Hauser was a gifted horticulturist who grew strawberries and prize winning potatoes. When the embargo on seeds from Europe began in 1912, Great-Grandpa saw this as a great opportunity to grow and sell perennial plants. Today, Hauser's Superior View Farm is one of the largest producers of northern field-grown perennial plants in the country. (Zone 3-4). Hauser's ships perennial plants all over the United States every spring and fall.
In 1928, during the depth of the great depression Grandpa J. Dawson Hauser started his first apple orchard as a way to make extra income for his growing family. Hauser's currently have about 2,000 various types of apple trees on 30 acres.
In 1988, Hauser's started a jam kitchen making Hauser's very own homemade jams, jelly and apple butter as a way to preseve that just picked flavor from the various fruit grown right here on the farm. All of Hauser's jam, jelly and apple butter is locally grown, homemade and state approved.
The one thing that has remained constant through all the years of Hauser's Superior View Farm is the passing of the farm from father to son. Jim Hauser Jr. and his wife Ellen are now the proud owners of Hauser's with a lot of help from Jim Hauser Sr. and his wife Marilyn.

A unique part of the Bayfield experience for nearly thirty years .... Highland Valley Farm was established when we settled near Bayfield to raise a family in 1977. A knowledge of beekeeping and honey production we brought with us. We were introduced to raspberry horticulture by our Bayfield predecessors. Blueberry production we pioneered by establishing the first commercial planting of newly developed winter-hardy blueberry varieties in northern Wisconsin. The production of Maple Syrup is our most recent enterprise addition.

About Ashland: Four flags have flown over this area: Spanish, French, English and American. This was part of the original Northwest Territory and was contained inside the borders of three states. Eight different Indian nations have lived on the Bay. Later settlers included European explorers, missionaries and fur traders. And more recently have been followed by the Yankees who platted and developed the lands, the railroaders, shippers, loggers, entrepreneurs and settlers.

Anchored along the shores of Chequamegon Bay, Washburn Wisconsin was founded in the early 1880s by European and American settlers. The good fortune of possessing a natural harbor and thousands of acres of prime timber made Washburn a perfect milling and shipping town. Train depots, lumber mills, coal and merchandise docks rapidly dotted the shoreline and employed thousands of workers. Many buildings in Washburn are made of locally quarried Lake Superior brownstone. The Washburn Historical Museum & Cultural Arts Center is a wonderful start to your education of Washburn's past.
